Chapter 894 - 893: Entering the Detention Center (Part 2)
"Clang!"The iron door of the cell slammed shut with a heavy thud. The newcomers who entered the cell kept silent, making the reverberating hum of the door particularly jarring, echoing alongside the footsteps of the guards walking away.
Eyes converged on Chu Ge, and the pungent air seemed to thicken with a stifling tension.
Soon, the sound of the guards' footsteps faded away. Seven or eight people exchanged looks and began to move towards Chu Ge, who was sitting in the corner.
"Kid in the corner, we're out there working our asses off, and you're here sitting pretty, huh?"
A young man in his twenties spoke first. He was tall and muscular, with thick eyebrows and a shaven head, a broad nose and mouth, muscles bulging even under his clothes, exuding a rogue aura. After speaking, he twisted his neck, causing a series of "crackling" sounds in the air.
Although Chu Ge heard every word clearly, he remained silent, slightly lowering his head, arms crossed over his chest as if he was still dozing off.
"Oh? Playing dead on me here?"
Seeing Chu Ge unresponsive, the bald young man wasn't angry; he laughed and said another sentence, raising his hands to crack his knuckles with more explosive "crackling" sounds in the air.
Beside him, a kid around eighteen or nineteen chimed in, "I don't think he's playing dead—looks more like he's acting cool, right? Damn, look at him! Anyone would think he's on a vacation, not in a cell. I'm seriously impressed."
After saying this, the kid even bowed to Chu Ge, "Your cool act is impressive; I admit defeat!"
"Hahaha..." This elicited a burst of laughter, but Chu Ge remained unmoved, sitting quietly as if everyone else was nonexistent.
"Damn, could this 'newbie' be deaf?"
The term "newbie" referred to newcomers—the prison slang for newly arrived inmates.
"Doesn't matter if he's deaf or not, rules have to be taught, or how else will he learn? What, are you sparing the disabled?"
"You kidding? Hitting cripples, mocking mutes, that's our specialty!"
The seven or eight people laughed and moved closer. The cell was cramped, and soon they formed a fan shape, surrounding Chu Ge in the center.
Li Zheming sat in the cell's prime viewing spot, watching the group, waiting to see a show. Given his status in the cell, handling such crude tasks was best left to others. Once they'd finished teaching the guy who resembled Chu Ge a lesson, he could come in for the finishing touch.
"Since words don't work on this guy, let's give him a practical lesson!"
"Guess he likes braised pork, spicy fish, egg-filled pancakes, or maybe martial arts?"
"How would I know? Why not just serve him each dish one by one?"
The bald man let out a sinister chuckle, taking the first move by kicking towards Chu Ge's head.
Just when everyone thought Chu Ge's head would be pinned against the wall by the bald man's shoe, the "deaf" man they spoke of finally moved—though none of them saw clearly how it happened, he moved.
As the bald man's right foot closed in on Chu Ge's head, Chu Ge suddenly raised his right hand, grabbing the bald man's ankle.
The bald man was stunned; before he could react, Chu Ge yanked backward with his right hand. Standing on one foot, the bald man lost his balance, toppling towards Chu Ge, and his stomach was met with Chu Ge's left fist.
With just one punch, the bald man's eyes bulged slightly, feeling a tumult in his stomach. But before he could even retch, an immense force from his captured right leg sent him crashing down.
With a dull thud, the bald man's eyes rolled back as he passed out cold.
"Damn! This kid dared to fight back!"
"Get him!"
The others paused for a moment, then erupted in anger, shouting as they all rushed to attack Chu Ge.
Li Zheming watched the unconscious bald man with a frown. Before he arrived, this guy was the best fighter in the cell, using his fists and connections with the guards to keep the top bunk spot...
And yet, the 'former top bunk' guy was put down just like that? Without even a chance to cry out?
As Li Zheming stood in astonishment, the sounds of fists and feet hitting flesh rang out in rapid succession. When he looked up again, all seven or eight of them had followed the bald man's path, dropping one by one to the floor, the entire sequence over in mere seconds, without a single one managing a scream.
As for the "deaf" man who had taken them all down, he remained seated in his original position, unchanged from before.
All those without a past were dumbfounded, their eyes almost popping out of their sockets, their mouths agape, with jaws nearly hitting their feet.
Li Zheming furrowed his brows, his eyes filled with suspicion and surprise, a sudden tingle ran across his scalp, could it be... is it possible...
When Chu Ge finally stood up, turning his gaze to Li Zheming, he flashed his signature smile, causing Li Zheming's pupils to shrink fiercely, cold sweat immediately broke out on his forehead.
Holy shit! It really is Chu Ge!
"Guard! Guar... mmm!"
Li Zheming instinctively shouted, but unfortunately, he managed only one word before a shoe suddenly flew over, the toe colliding with his mouth, causing a pang in his nose, abruptly cutting off the rest of the sound.
Li Zheming turned to run, but would Chu Ge give him this chance?
Ridiculous! The answer is, of course, no.
With a swift step, Chu Ge pounced forward, grabbing Li Zheming's collar from behind, making his legs churn like on a treadmill, yet he couldn't advance a single centimeter.
Chu Ge stepped closer, wrapping his arm around Li Zheming's neck, grinning into his ear, "Seems like you're doing pretty well here?"
Li Zheming wanted to shout, but his arms were pinched, not a word could escape, he could only cast a pleading glance to the others in the cell, but Chu Ge's actions had already startled everyone, most instinctively stepping back, no one dared to come over to rile him up.
There were a few who hesitated at their spots, but when Chu Ge shot them a cold glare, they all meekly averted their eyes, backing away a few steps with awkward expressions.
Li Zheming, furious and terrified inside, cursed silently, but unfortunately, the police had scattered them into different cells, there was no one from his old crew in this cell.
Quickly, Li Zheming's face turned bright red, when his complexion started shading towards purple, Chu Ge spoke calmly into his ear.
"Li Zheming, although I hope you'll cooperate obediently, I won't advise you to; you can scream all you want, of course provided you consider the consequences."
After saying this, Chu Ge released Li Zheming's neck.
"Hel..."
Just as Li Zheming uttered a sound, Chu Ge's large hand pressed the back of his head, slamming him into the wall.
The corners of those who hadn't fainted in the cell twitched, watching Chu Ge's move made them feel the pain, they instinctively backed away further, wishing to be as far from Chu Ge as possible.
Of course, they empathized mentally, but Li Zheming experienced the real pain, not only pain but dizziness, seeing stars, ears buzzing, and nosebleed flowing.
Staring at Li Zheming for a few seconds, though he wasn't screaming now, Chu Ge remained vigilant, pushing him onto a mattress, stepping on his mouth, and turned to the others huddled in a corner.
"I just have some business with him, you all should mind your own business."
The usual fierce-looking inmates nodded quickly, like obedient schoolchildren, yet none moved, not because they didn't want to, but because they didn't dare.
In the detention cell, the rule of the biggest fist prevails, and Chu Ge had already proven he has the biggest fist here, much bigger than the new "headman" Li Zheming, how could these people not be terrified?
"Go back to your spots, help those who fainted to their places, I don't wish to repeat myself."
Chu Ge gazed apathetically at the petrified men, and they complied promptly, within a minute, except for Chu Ge who remained standing, others were either sitting or lying down, making the cell appear perfectly orderly.
"Thanks." Chu Ge smiled slightly, tossing a pack of Red Pagoda Mountain cigarettes to the closest person, "I have a pack here, share it among yourselves."
There's an old saying about giving a sweet date after a slap, and Chu Ge was doing just that—the combination of carrot and stick always being the best way to ensure obedience.
Glancing down at Li Zheming at his feet, Chu Ge smiled lightly, "Take a nap first, once you're rested, we can have a good chat."
With that, Chu Ge lifted his foot, delivering a light kick to Li Zheming's occiput, not using enough force to cause significant harm, but it was more than enough to knock him out.
After knocking Li Zheming out, Chu Ge laid him on his side, making him look like he was sleeping, then sat against the wall beside him.
In the stifling silence, Chu Ge pondered his own matters, while others were silent, occasionally sneaking glances filled with curiosity and apprehension.
Whenever Chu Ge caught such glances, he returned a relatively friendly look or a slight nod, although he didn't truly aim to befriend them, he at least hoped they'd stay out of his way.
