Chapter 1071 - 1070: So What
Chapter 1071 - 1070: So What
"I remember I promised to tell you why you couldn't successfully hypnotize me, and while saying it, I forgot. Getting old really makes my memory fail."Chu Chengrui still looked like the kind-hearted old man, but his twinkling eyes revealed a mischievous glint, like a "cat playing with a mouse."
Obviously, Chu Chengrui wasn't "forgetting" at all but was enjoying amusing himself by teasing Chu Ge in this way.
He didn't expect Chu Ge to answer, so he quickly continued, "Explaining this might be complicated, so why not I show you some video footage first?"
On the screen, Chu Chengrui's face, which Chu Ge wanted to punch, disappeared, replaced by a series of slides.
The first photo showed a young pregnant woman covered in various tubes, with her hands and feet bound by cold robotic arms, sitting in terror on a metal chair connected to numerous instruments.
The second photo showed a four- or five-year-old boy holding a lollipop, his big, bright black eyes full of confusion.
The third photo was of a naked, muscular black man, covered in scars with skin ripped open, shocking to behold.
The fourth, fifth... thirty-ninth, fortieth photos showed men, women, elderly, and young, most of them were Hua Country people, with a small number being foreigners.
Then, Chu Chengrui's image reappeared on the screen.
"Haha, have you seen clearly? These people are extremely important to my experiments, and they count as top-secret information. Ever since I started the 'Human Limitations' project, you're the first outsider to see these precious materials."
"Each of them has something extraordinary. Some communicate with animals, some have innate strength, some eat immensely, some are immune to electric shocks, and others... have the ability to hypnotize people."
Chu Chengrui spoke unhurriedly, and as he said this, a photo that had flashed in the slides appeared on the screen again.
"I forgot this person's name, roughly... it seems like his surname is Su? He has this incredible hypnotic ability."
When Chu Ge first saw this photo, he didn't pay much attention, but after hearing Chu Chengrui's words, he took a closer look and realized that this man resembled Su Haidong, whom he had met in Japan, increasingly seeming like father and son.
"I spent a lot of time, money, and manpower getting these people, and the amount spent using them for research is an astronomical figure that even makes me feel pain. Fortunately, they didn't disappoint the money I spent on them, each played more or less their role."
"You must have thought of something, right? Yes, thanks to this guy with hypnotic abilities, through research on him, I obtained results that satisfy me. Although I still don't understand the principle of this ability, can't explain it scientifically, and can't apply it, at least... my body developed resistance to this ability."
"So, you failed today." Chu Chengrui smiled triumphantly, shrugging his shoulders.
"To be honest, when I injected myself with this antibody, I doubted if I was being redundant, but it turns out, I really should thank this guy."
Hearing Chu Chengrui say this, although Chu Ge already had a sinking feeling in his heart, he clenched his fists, furrowed his brow, and asked, "Tell me, where are these people now?"
Chu Chengrui looked at Chu Ge with a gaze that seemed to view him like an idiot, amusing or disdainfully tugging at the corners of his mouth, and asked, "Do you think... there's any need to ask? Could it be that someone as tough as you has been scared silly by the current situation? Lost all intelligence?"
Chu Ge slowly and heavily nodded, his expression as calm as a stagnant pool, yet his eyes cast an icy, penetrating glare at the screen before him.
"You're right, I did ask unnecessarily."
Under Chu Ge's gaze, a momentary delay appeared on Chu Chengrui's proud face, but he quickly regained his composed demeanor.
"Since that's the case, let's continue discussing this hypnotic ability, I'm curious, your ability is very similar to the other guy's, yet also different in some ways."
"When you tried to hypnotize me, even if your expression seemed calm, I felt as if I were being watched by a giant tiger ready to pounce at any moment. If given more time, I might not have been able to resist and would've been hypnotized by you. Now, can you explain this situation?"
Chu Ge's heart skipped a beat as he suddenly recalled some details from the dinner table with Chu Chengrui. Even though the room wasn't hot, sweat beaded on his forehead, and when he got up from the table, his body swayed. If Chu Shiyao hadn't gone over to help him, he probably would have fallen to the ground.
Although there was no point in saying anything now, if the situation happened again, Chu Chengrui, realizing he was being hypnotized, would likely have found an excuse to leave. Still, Chu Ge regretted not buying more time at that moment, not fighting for a bit more!
If... if he just had a little more time, how could things have turned out this badly?
Aside from this, there was something else that bothered Chu Ge even more.
Could it be... that other members of the Su Family, apart from him, who could practice that cultivation technique, did not encounter that fierce white tiger? Otherwise, why would Chu Chengrui ask such a question?
Seeing Chu Ge remain silent, Chu Chengrui smiled confidently again.
"Since you don't want to talk now, I won't force you. I believe you'll be willing to tell me what's going on sooner or later. I'm increasingly fascinated by you—not only do you have a monstrous recovery ability, but you also possess that strange hypnosis ability. Despite my many years of research, considering myself well-informed, I've never seen such a case before."
Even though Chu Ge knew there was no use in verbally sparring with Chu Chengrui now, he couldn't help but speak upon seeing that elderly face.
"The world is vast, the universe is wide. Do you really think eating a few more decades of rice than me makes you well-informed? What a joke!"
Chu Chengrui raised an eyebrow, "Oh? Then what do you consider yourself, being brought here by me, the so-called joke in your eyes?"
Chu Ge sneered, "Chu Chengrui, I stand by my words, we'll see who laughs last. Besides, you're just a frog in the well. With your so-called research, you're a million years away from rising above the rules, not to mention it's sheer luck you've survived this long without hitting a real snag while searching for your targets. Unfortunately, you've hit one now."
As Chu Ge spoke with such certainty, Chu Chengrui's expression shifted several times. He furrowed his brows slightly, seemingly contemplating whether Chu Ge's words were mere threats or had some truth.
After a while, Chu Chengrui looked up at Chu Ge, "Heh... are you implying you're the snag I've hit now?"
"Whether I am or not, you'll find out. Also... my previous statement might have a flaw, because even without me, how can you be sure you haven't hit a snag before?"
"Perhaps, you've already hit one. At this very moment, this minute, this second, someone so powerful that you can't afford to provoke is on their way to take your head, and it's laughable that you're completely unaware."
Chu Ge's voice was not loud, his pace not fast, and he even seemed somewhat nonchalant; yet these words made Chu Chengrui's expression rather uncertain.
"Nonsense!"
Suddenly, like an old cat whose tail had been stepped on, Chu Chengrui responded in near exasperation with those four words.
"Chu Ge, do you know how much wealth I hold? The number of powers backing me? Even setting aside those domestic statesmen, do you know how many global organizations I'm connected with? Even if we disregard all that, do you have any idea how many elite troops and weapons I command?"
Chu Ge scoffed disdainfully, "Chu Chengrui, you rattle off so much, I just ask you, so what?"
"So what, indeed!" For the first time, Chu Chengrui smirked coldly at Chu Ge, squinting his eyes with an incredibly arrogant tone: "That means I, Chu Chengrui, fear no one!"
"Cut the crap. If you really think that, if you believe you're so invincible that no one dares touch you, would you go through the trouble of explaining this to me? Would you sneak me here like this? If you're so great, why don't you move your lab to Qian'an Gate Square, to the Citizens' Assembly Hall, to the White House, to the Pentagon?"
Raising his cuffed hands, Chu Ge flipped him off with both middle fingers, coldly questioning him again.
Chu Chengrui's old face trembled violently, his kindly features turning menacing, looking more like an old cat with its fur up, his fists clenched tightly.
Chu Chengrui glared maliciously at Chu Ge, eyes seemingly ablaze, taking heavy breaths. It took several deep breaths for him to regain a semblance of calm, a smile reappearing on his face.
However, his smile now looked like stiff facial muscles draped with a human mask, a smile in name only, no longer carrying the breezy demeanor of before.
