Chapter 294: The End
Chapter 294: The End
A month later, the hospital finally issued a critical condition notice, which meant Leo couldn’t make it through the day.
Holly Sawyer, as usual, chatted with Leo, giving him a massage, and there wasn’t the slightest trace of sadness in her expression.
"Holly..."
Leo’s lips were a bit dry and chapped. He looked at Holly, his eyes filled with dimness.
He couldn’t stay with her much longer, but he really couldn’t bear to leave her.
"I’m here."
Holly lifted her gaze, with a gentle smile in her eyes.
It hurt deeply inside, but no matter how painful it was, she had to smile and never show tears to Leo; otherwise, he would be heartbroken for her.
"I promised to always be there for you, but I might not be able to do that. I’m sorry."
Leo reached out to hold Holly’s hand, speaking slowly, a sense of powerlessness in his voice.
No one could ever predict the events of birth, aging, illness, and death.
He also wanted to always stay with Holly, but it seemed like fate couldn’t bear their happiness and sought to take his life.
"It’s okay, you’ve been with me for a long time already."
Holly bit her lip tightly, forcing a smile onto her face.
"It’s alright. I need to go ahead and pave the way for you, make sure your journey is smooth in the future."
Leo said with a smile.
Holly nodded, "Mm."
The heart monitor suddenly reacted violently, but the smile remained on Leo’s lips.
Jenna Grant and the others furrowed their brows, knowing all too well what this meant.
"I still want to hear you call me ’brother’ one more time."
Leo had a smile at the corners of his lips. The look he gave Holly was full of affection, tinged with indulgence.
"Brother..."
Holly called out, tears welled up in her eyes, holding back from falling.
Leo: "I’m here."
"Holly, don’t cry. Don’t be sad. I’m just going ahead to pave the way."
"I’ll always be by your side. When you miss me, remember to look at the photos often."
"I can’t bear for you to be sad."
"In the next life, I’ll find you sooner, and we can continue to be together."
"Holly, I love you..."
Leo said, his voice growing weaker and weaker, and before he could finish the last sentence, he had already closed his eyes.
"Brother."
Holly felt Leo’s hand loosen, and she looked up to see that his eyes were already closed.
The ECG showed a straight line, signifying a life had ended.
"Brother!"
Tears finally couldn’t be contained and fell down Holly’s cheeks, dripping onto Leo’s arm.
"Leo."
"Leo."
"Dad."
"Grandpa."
"Uncle."
"Uncle."
"..."
Various calls echoed in the ward, urgent in tone.
But Leo never opened his eyes again. He looked as if he was asleep, a faint smile on his lips.
He was smiling, smiling even in death.
Holly held onto Leo’s lifeless arm, her tears never ceasing.
The pulse she felt yesterday that was so vibrant was no longer there today.
The ward was shrouded in a layer of low pressure.
"You said you would walk with me, so why didn’t you keep your promise?"
"You said you would be with me for a lifetime; we haven’t even finished this life together yet."
"You said you wouldn’t leave early on me, so why did you deceive me?"
"You said..."
At that moment, Holly’s emotions finally erupted, crying with a heart-wrenching sorrow.
When Leo was sick, Holly was calm, even when she knew Leo wouldn’t make it, she was still composed. But after Leo truly left, her emotions were uncontrollable.
It finally exploded at this moment.
"Mom, Dad couldn’t stand to see you cry the most,"
Jenna Grant embraced Holly, speaking softly.
Yes, Leo was especially good to Holly when he was alive, never wanting her to feel sad, never wanting her to shed tears.
"Yes, didn’t you hate seeing me cry? But now I’m crying; please open your eyes and look at me, okay?"
"I’m so sad, and I want you to comfort me, will you comfort me?"
Holly held tightly onto Leo’s hand, her eyes reddened.
Others turned their heads away, feeling deeply burdened inside.
But Leo remained motionless.
No one knew how long Holly cried before she fainted.
Leo’s body was brought back to the villa, from top to bottom, all draped in white, enveloped in sorrow.
"Mom, let me peel that for you."
In the evening, Holly sat in the living room peeling an orange, her eyes red.
Jenna saw this and went to help Holly.
Since she became sensible, peeling, shelling, inserting straws... all these tasks were done by Leo for Holly. Holly had never done them herself.
In Jenna’s eyes, Holly was a woman who was doted on to the extreme, who didn’t know how to do anything.
"No need, I can do it myself."
Holly shook her head, clumsily peeling the fruit’s skin away.
"It’s not that I can’t, it’s that he wanted to spoil me."
Holly placed the peeled orange down and then moved to peel an apple.
The fruit bowl held various fruits with skins, and Holly peeled each one without eating them.
Over the next two days, Jenna noticed that Holly took on many tasks, cleaning, cooking, doing laundry...
All those mundane life tasks, Holly went through them all, including peeling shrimp and picking out fish bones...
Jenna expressed great confusion and asked, but Holly just smiled without answering.
The custom here was that only after three days could one be cremated or buried.
"I just want to do the things he did for me, experience them once."
Jenna continued to probe, and this was Holly’s reply, her face full of smiles.
Whether in the past or now, whenever Leo’s name was mentioned, she would still smile.
On the third night, Holly entered the room where Leo lay, looked at his serene face, smiled, and pulled up a chair to sit down.
"Brother, Holly misses you."
"Brother, have you paved the way below yet?"
"Brother, in the days below, have you thought of Holly? Holly really misses you, I’m not happy without you around."
"Holly now realizes, Holly’s happiness is brother."
"..."
Holly chattered a lot to Leo, even though she knew he couldn’t possibly hear.
Leo was to be cremated the next day; if she didn’t say it now, it would be too late.
Holly reached out to gently stroke Leo’s cheek, then drew a smile on her face and lay down beside Leo’s bed, slowly closing her eyes.
The following day, when Jenna and others opened the door, they saw Holly lying by the bedside, with an empty bottle of sleeping pills by her side, and no longer breathing.
On the table, there was a note: I miss him and want to be with him. I’m afraid he’ll be lonely down there alone.
