Chapter 67 Uncle's Car Accident
Chapter 67 Uncle's Car Accident
Xia Shiyu hurriedly went in and saw her aunt sitting there with red eyes, talking to her parents.
She sat down next to her, and her aunt wiped away her tears when she saw her. "Xiaoyu is here."
"Auntie," Xia Shiyu called out first, then asked what had happened.
She remembered someone saying her uncle had been in a car accident when she came in, and she hoped it wasn't too serious.
Xia Lilian sighed, "It's alright, your uncle only injured his foot this time, it's not serious, he just needs to rest for a few months."
Xia Shiyu breathed a sigh of relief upon hearing this. Thank goodness it was just a foot injury, nothing serious.
She patted her aunt's hand, "That's good. The injury isn't serious, so Aunt doesn't need to be sad anymore."
Xia Lilian shook her head, her eyes welling up with tears again. "I just feel like we're unlucky. We finally managed to pay off your brother's previous loans over the past few years, and then this happened to him. Qingqing even developed depression. It will be difficult for her to afford her medication, tuition, and living expenses."
Xia Shiyu and his parents fell silent. It was a sad story. A couple of years ago, Xia Lilian's son was scammed at school. No one knew what tricks the scammers used, but the family's savings of more than 100,000 yuan were completely swindled away.
My aunt's family has always been one of the less well-off among our relatives. Neither of her parents has a high level of education; in fact, her husband didn't even finish junior high school. They are all manual laborers, and my aunt stays home to farm.
Even though they lived frugally, the whole family still managed to move on, but who would have thought that when their son went to college, a swindler would take most of the family's money.
Even after reporting it to the police, they said there was little hope.
There was a lot of crying and commotion at home during that time, and the whole family was in a bad mood. My uncle almost broke my cousin's legs. In the end, he was scammed out of more than 100,000 yuan, and that wasn't the end of it. Later, it was found out that my cousin had also taken out loans of tens of thousands of yuan without knowing what was going on.
The family had to borrow money from relatives to pay it back, but after this incident, everyone in the family became very silent, and arguments would break out from time to time. The aunt cried every day.
My cousin, who is still in junior high school, was in such a repressive family environment. I don't know when she became depressed. Fortunately, it wasn't too serious when it was discovered, but she still has to take medication.
Now, the aunt and uncle were determined to earn the money back. The aunt stopped farming and went to work in a restaurant in the city, while the uncle looked for work everywhere.
My cousin felt guilty and stopped going home. He would take odd jobs whenever he had time, and he also worked during winter and summer vacations. After graduating from university, he immediately found a job and only sent money back home from time to time.
When the relatives found out about these things, they were heartbroken. However, their family had spent a lot of money to treat their grandparents' illnesses. This money was paid by Xia Lihua, her uncles, and her aunt. They didn't ask her aunt for any money.
The amount borrowed was a bit small, but her family wasn't in a hurry for her aunt's family to pay it back.
Xia Lihua couldn't help but say, "Little sister, don't worry, we'll help you if anything happens."
Yu Juan also advised, "Yes, you must cheer up. It's fortunate that you only injured your foot. It will get better in a while. You still have to take care of Gu Qingqing."
Xia Shiyu couldn't say anything, she could only hold her aunt's rough, scarred hand, hoping to offer her some comfort.
Xia Lilian felt much better after being persuaded like that, but she hadn't come here just to cry and complain.
She found it difficult to speak, but she was indeed short of money, so she could only say embarrassedly, "Third Brother, I know I'm being useless, but I really have no other choice. I haven't paid back the money I borrowed from you last time, and I have to borrow some more this time..."
Xia Lihua paused for a moment, then got up to get a bank card. "Little sister, here's 20,000 yuan. Take it and use it for emergencies."
The aunt took it and kept thanking him, saying, "Thank you, Third Brother, thank you, Third Brother."
In the past two years, the pressures of life have made her look noticeably older, but thankfully, she gets along well with her siblings.
But every time she asked to borrow money, it was like tearing a piece of flesh from her heart. This dull pain about money was hard to heal in a short time, and every mention of it felt like a deep wound being torn open in her heart.
Xia Shiyu didn't know what to say. Her aunt was really in a terrible situation, having encountered all sorts of bad luck.
In the end, all she could say was, "Auntie, let me see you off. Tomorrow I'll go to the hospital with my parents to visit Uncle."
Xia Lihua: "Yes, the rest of us will go and take a look. Don't worry."
"Okay, thank you, Third Brother."
Xia Shiyu took her aunt downstairs to get in the car. They had been chatting upstairs for a while, and most of the villagers downstairs had already left. The few remaining were buying groceries, but seeing the atmosphere, they were too embarrassed to speak.
It was only then that Xia Shiyu realized that these villagers had come to buy vegetables.
No wonder. Although their village also loves excitement, in recent years they have rarely flocked to each other's homes to watch. Instead, they spread the news around the next day.
My aunt didn't let her go very far; she only dropped her off at the bus stop in town because she needed to ask other people for directions.
Xia Shiyu got off the bus. She was in such a hurry that she didn't have time to put down the vegetables, so she thought she would have to bring them when she went to see her uncle.
"Auntie, be careful. We're here for you no matter what happens, okay?"
The aunt nodded, "Okay, I understand. You go back now, and be careful on the way."
Looking at her aunt's slightly hunched back, Xia Shiyu felt that God was truly cruel and that the fraudsters were truly despicable, turning what was once a thriving family into this state.
She returned home in low spirits. By then, all the villagers who had gone to buy groceries had left, leaving only her family. The group of people sat together discussing her aunt's situation.
Xia Lihua asked, "Have you taken your aunt to her place?"
Xia Shiyu nodded. "She said she had something to do, so I took her to the bus stop."
Xia Lihua hummed a couple of times, not knowing what else to say. Everyone felt sorry for his little sister's ordeal, but there was only so much they could do to help. The rest was up to them to figure out on their own.
Xia Shiyu had an idea in mind, but she wasn't sure yet, so she didn't say it aloud.
My maternal grandparents weren't close to my aunt; they'd only met her a few times. But they were heartbroken when they learned about her ordeal.
Grandma sighed, "This girl is pitiful; life isn't easy for her."
Grandpa shook his head, "Yes, yes."
That's right, it's hard for anyone to feel bad when things turn out like this.
Yu Juan could only say, "When I go to see Li Lian and the others, I'll prepare a meal at home and bring it over. They're patients, so they need to eat something good to nourish themselves."
"Okay, I think we can kill that old hen."
The group discussed the matter in the living room. Xia Lihua called his other siblings to discuss when they could go over and take a look together.
