Chapter 355 The Second Daughter in the Historical Fiction 50
Old Fu kept cursing at his bride on his way home.
"What's the use of keeping a woman like that at home? She's just pretty. Does being pretty guarantee you'll have enough to eat?"
"Boss, you must never date a woman who's all looks and no substance, she has absolutely no manners."
He was, after all, her elder, yet she didn't even glance at him—what kind of attitude was that?
As he spoke, he brought up Song Xianyin again.
"Why did you ignore Zheng Hao when he spoke to you today? Have you forgotten all the rules your father taught you?"
The evening breeze was a bit chilly, and Song Xianyin yawned as she followed behind Fu Ci's shadow.
"I'm talking to you, did you hear me!" Old Fu looked at Song Xianyin impatiently.
Song Xianyin pretended not to hear and continued on her way.
Old Fu sighed. Having a daughter like that was truly a waste for the Fu family.
He looked at Fu Ci and said, "I just asked your Aunt Shitou. She's spent a lot of money on you. Your father and I will work hard to raise enough money for you."
"Don't find someone who isn't good-looking. They say sons resemble their mothers, so what if the son you have isn't good-looking?"
"When you go to college, you'll meet a lot more girls. You can ask around and find out which families are well-off, and chat with them. Who knows, you might just find someone you like."
Song Xianyin couldn't help but ask, "Is eldest brother going to marry into the family?"
Old Fu glared at Song Xianyin: "What nonsense are you spouting?"
“How could we let your brother marry into our family? We’re going to have him marry into our family. What have you learned from all that studying? You can’t even understand such a simple sentence. I’ve already told your mother not to waste money.”
Song Xianyin snorted: "Isn't that what you mean? To have your older brother go find a rich young lady from a wealthy family and curry favor with her."
Old Fu was trembling with anger: "Try talking nonsense again, and I'll really beat you to death. No matter how well-off her family is, she's still a woman. The money in her family must be left to her son-in-law."
“That’s still considered marrying into the family. Rich people aren’t stupid. Our family is so poor, why would they want to marry into our family?” Song Xianyin continued to retort.
Her father dreams all the time, and they're all unrealistic dreams.
Old Fu was furious and cursed, "Are you out of your mind? These things are negotiable. Anyway, my Fu family's son will never marry into the family."
"Even if you have to marry into the family and change your surname, there will be opportunities to change it back later. Once you're in power, once the person in charge dies, there will be plenty of opportunities."
"I don't know what I'm thinking all day long."
His son is so outstanding, he can find any woman he wants. Once his eldest son gets rich, he'll be able to enjoy a life of leisure.
Fu Ci had no expression, as if Lao Fu wasn't talking about him.
Old Fu couldn't stop smiling as he thought about the future: "Son, what kind of girl do you like?"
The answer to him was silence.
"Pfft." Song Xianyin couldn't help but laugh out loud.
Nobody paid any attention to him. Wasn't that embarrassing?
Old Fu remained silent with a sullen face.
Oh well, that's how boys are when they grow up. Once they enter society, they'll realize how right he was.
"You can't accept too much dowry. Like that one today, they spent so much money and still put on airs for the stone. Isn't that like inviting an ancestor back home?"
We were all out all day, and everyone is very tired tonight.
When Song Xianyin was doing laundry, she was so tired that she fell asleep as soon as she got into bed.
She usually doesn't dream much, but tonight she kept feeling someone making noise in her sleep.
She groggily opened her eyes; it was still quite dark outside. She turned over and went back to sleep.
The noise subsided for a while.
A few moments later, a series of screams suddenly rang out outside, startling Song Xianyin awake. Someone's dog was barking incessantly outside.
Song Xianyin leaned against the window, staring blankly outside.
She heard a pitiful female voice crying out something, crying so hard that Song Xianyin couldn't understand what she was saying at all.
Gradually, the footsteps increased, and everyone's voices sounded anxious, with some people muttering curses under their breath.
"That damned bastard, what kind of woman did he bring back? This is karma!"
The woman soothed the crying child in her arms, saying, "Don't cry, don't cry, it's okay, it's really a tragedy!"
"How could this woman be so shameless? My ancestral hall was burned down! Every wrong has its perpetrator, and every debt its debtor, what is she doing?!"
"Get out of the way! Don't block the way!" several men shouted gruffly, their voices urgent.
Song Xianyin smelled something burning, and just as she was about to get out of bed, her bedroom door was suddenly flung open.
Fu Ci was panting, and there was still some sweat on his forehead.
The two exchanged a silent glance.
"It's okay, you can go back to sleep." Fu Ci said and then closed the door again.
Before Song Xianyin could react, she heard Lao Fu cursing again outside.
"We must catch this woman! She's completely lawless! My kitchen was burned down! She's trying to kill the whole village! This woman is so vicious! She deserves to go to the deepest hell."
Song Xianyin put on her clothes and went outside.
A large crowd had gathered outside, their faces filled with anger, muttering curses and profanities.
Song Xianyin looked into the distance and saw that Shi Tou's house had been completely burned down, as had the houses of the villagers nearby. The fire was spreading all the way. Fortunately, someone noticed something was wrong and woke up. Old Fu's house was relatively far away, so only the kitchen was burned.
Fu Ci was carrying water and fighting the fire with others. He was wearing a tank top and his back was covered in sweat.
"Everyone, stop standing there and hurry up and get some water! What if it catches fire again before we've extinguished it completely?" someone shouted.
The others made a token effort, but since their house wasn't burned, why should they care?
Song Xianyin used a shovel to scrape away the ashes in the kitchen. She poked at it and found that the pots had been burned to ashes. If she hadn't stopped it in time, the wall would have been burned through.
"That heartless wretch, that wicked woman, she'll get her comeuppance sooner or later. She's done so many bad things and harmed so many people!"
Old Fu stood at the door cursing incessantly, his face turning red from the rant.
Song Xianyin glanced at him: "Dad, hurry up and come shovel the ashes!"
He just kept cursing and didn't do anything.
Old Fu didn't go over; he just sat at the doorway, cursing and occasionally saying something to the people putting out the fire.
"Boss, hurry up and fetch more water. Let's make sure we get plenty of water. Don't worry about those people over there, there are so many of them."
Fu Ci took two buckets to the river to fetch water, and soon returned with the water.
Old Fu was still cursing at the people next to him: "Look at this woman, sorry, it's all stones, not us, yet we're the ones who got dragged into this."
"If it weren't for Old Jiang getting up in the middle of the night, our village would have been burned to the ground. The prettier a woman is, the more ruthless she is."
Fu Ci took the shovel from Song Xianyin's hand: "Go back to sleep."
Song Xianyin handed him the shovel and whispered, "If Dad sells me off, I'll do the same."
She's going to burn the village down too.
Fu Ci paused for a moment, then lowered his eyes: "Let's go back inside."
He would never let Fu Dexing have that idea again.
