Chapter 316: Truth Serum (5)
Chapter 316: Truth Serum (5)
"There's an old man," said Harry, his throat still tight, "and Bertha Jorkins."
Sirius gripped Harry's shoulder painfully.
"The people the wand has recently harmed," said Dumbledore, nodding. "They appear in reverse order. Of course, if you leave the two wands connected, more illusions will appear. So, tell me, Harry, what do the illusions say to you? Or what do they do?"
"Yes...Mom and Dad, they, they..."
At this point, Harry felt he couldn't go on any further. He turned to look at Sirius and saw him covering his face with his hands. "Harry, you've done very well," Dumbledore said as the phoenix soared into the air and landed on its perch by the door again. "You've been very brave tonight, Harry. You've far exceeded my expectations of you."
"You have shown courage equal to that of those who fought to the death against Voldemort at the height of his power. You have shouldered the responsibility of a grown wizard and found yourself fully capable of it – you have raised our expectations of you even higher."
"Sleep well tonight, child. Sirius will be with you," said Dumbledore.
Sirius nodded and stood up. He transformed into a large black dog again and followed Harry out of the office and walked with him down the stairs to Harry's dormitory.
"Okay, Lamia, it's your turn now. What did you want to say just now?" Dumbledore walked up to Lamia after Sirius and Harry left.
"I have nothing to say, sir. What Harry said is true." Lamia said seriously.
"Is it?" said Dumbledore calmly, showing no sign of trusting Lamia.
Lamia: "Yes."
"Then, can you explain to me who Tom is?" Dumbledore's eyes suddenly became sharp. He stood up, and the pressure from inside out surprised Lamia a little.
"What?" Lamia tried her best to keep her tone less harsh.
"Lamia, tell me why you know Tom Riddle and it seems that you have a close relationship with him."
Dumbledore has not yet figured out where the Tom he saw in Harry's memory, or the young Voldemort, came from, but this does not prevent him from asking about the relationship between Lamia and Tom.
Perhaps this will be a key to defeating Voldemort. Dumbledore's eyes became sharper when he thought of this.
"I don't know who Tom is, sir." Lamia said stiffly. She was sure that it was not Harry who told Dumbledore this news, so it must be Dumbledore who took advantage of Harry's unstable mind to invade his brain and saw this part of the memory.
Then, Lamia didn't need to admit it at all, because Dumbledore had no way of proving that what he saw was true, as long as she absolutely refused to admit it.
"Then I'll just have to look at it myself."
Lamia closed her eyes and refused to respond to anything Dumbledore said.
The next second, Dumbledore stood up in confusion. "You have practiced Occlumency," he said affirmatively.
"I don't know what that is, sir," said Lamia.
Dumbledore looked at Lamia with a complicated expression for a long moment. "I hope you can have some sincerity towards Hogwarts and its students. They shouldn't be hurt unnecessarily. Be it Voldemort or Tom, they're not people you can get along with for long. You should be well aware of that."
Lamia was silent. She knew that what Dumbledore said was right, but what else could she do? She absolutely could not let Dumbledore catch any evidence of her knowing Tom.
Even though he now believed what he saw in Harry's mind, he didn't see it with his own eyes after all. Everything could still be salvaged, and she could leave soon.
"Sir, what are you talking about?" Lamia pretended to be stupid.
"Forget it, have a good rest, child." Dumbledore's gaze left Lamia, and he sat alone on the chair in the office and slowly closed his eyes.
Everything returned to silence.
The office door opened quietly the next second, and Lamia walked out of the principal's office with mixed feelings. Perhaps she could get Tom to change his stance and come to her side, but this was too difficult, and Lamia was about to leave. No matter how you looked at it, this was not a good deal.
Perhaps because she was in too heavy a mood, time passed quickly. It seemed like only a few minutes had passed before Lamia stood at the door of the lounge, and some familiar voices came from inside.
She pushed the door open to find Mrs. Weasley, Hermione, and Bill standing inside.
"Lamia, Lamia! Are you okay?" Hermione ran over anxiously. As soon as she heard what happened tonight, she hurried to see Harry, and then rushed to see Lamia without stopping all night.
"I'm fine, Hermione." Lamia felt even more uncomfortable. Was she being too selfish?
"It's all right, it's all right." Mrs. Weasley's tears flowed out.
Lamia hugged Mrs. Weasley, her heart felt even heavier. There was no doubt that Dumbledore had called them here. Was he trying to remind her that there were people she cared about in Hogwarts?
It wasn't that Lamia didn't want them to stay here, but she didn't want to answer anything about tonight.
"You look unwell, Lamia. I'll go get Madam Pomfrey." Bill said worriedly. He felt sorry for this independent and pitiful girl.
"No, I'm fine," Lamia said. "I'm just tired."
But Bill went anyway, and Lamia couldn't stop him.
Mrs. Weasley ruffled Lamia's hair unnecessarily, tears welling in her eyes.
Madam Pomfrey hurried into the common room with a small bottle of something and a tall glass in one hand. The small bottle contained a purple potion.
"You need to drink it all, Lamia," she said. "This medicine will give you a deep, dreamless sleep."
Lamia took the wine glass and took a few sips. The taste was hard to describe, but the feeling was very strong. She suddenly felt dizzy and everything around her became blurry. The light above her head seemed to be winking at her friendlyly, and she felt that her body seemed to sink deeper and deeper into the warm feather mattress.
Before she could finish the medicine or say another word, Lamia was exhausted and fell into a dreamless sleep.
